Compatibility and materials
The conical strainer, known as a chinois or china cap, is called a "Chinese" because its shape resembles the conical hats traditionally worn by the Chinese in the 19th century. The name is borrowed from the French adjective "chinois," which means Chinese, according to Wikipedia. Although the instrument is of French, not Chinese, origin, the name has stuck because of the visual resemblance.
